If you have Microsoft OneDrive, then you know that it can be a great way to store and access your files. However, if you ever lose or delete a file from OneDrive, it can be difficult to get it back. Here are some tips on how to recover deleted files and folders from Microsoft OneDrive.
- Start by opening OneDrive and logging in. If you don’t have an account, you can create one by clicking the link in the top left corner of OneDrive.
- Once you’re logged in, select the “Files” tab and select the folder that you want to recover from. If there are multiple folders within a single file system, then they will all be listed under “Files.”
- Click on the “Recover” button and wait for OneDrive to start recovering your data. This may take a few minutes or even longer depending on how large the file system is.
- Once OneDrive has recovered all of your data, select the “Files” tab again and select the folder that you want to view your data in again. You should now see your original files and folders within OneDrive!
There’s arguably no feeling worse than deleting a file or folder that you didn’t mean to delete. If this unfortunate event took place in your Microsoft OneDrive account, then there are a few recovery options at your disposal.
Restore a Deleted File From Your OneDrive Recycle Bin
If you deleted a file or folder from your OneDrive account, you can restore them from the Recycle Bin within 30 days. After 30 days, the deleted file or folder is automatically and permanently deleted from the Recycle Bin.
You can do this from either your desktop or mobile device.
Restore a Deleted File or Folder Via Desktop
First, log in to your OneDrive account from your desktop and then click “Recycle Bin” in the left-hand pane.
Once in the Recycle Bin, right-click the file or folder you want to restore and then click “Restore” from the context menu.
The selected file or folder will then be restored. If you want to restore every file and folder in the Recycle Bin at once, click the “Restore All Items” option at the top of the screen.
A confirmation window will appear. Click the blue “Restore” button to proceed.
All of the files and folders will be restored.
Restore a Deleted File or Folder Via Mobile Device
To restore a deleted OneDrive file or folder using your mobile device, you’ll need to download the OneDrive app for iOS or Android. Once installed, tap the app icon to launch it.
Once you’re in the app, tap “Files” at the bottom of the screen.
Next, tap “Recycle Bin,” found at the bottom of the list of folders.
In the Recycle Bin, locate the file or folder you want to restore, tap the three dots to the right of it, and then select “Restore” from the menu that appears at the bottom of the screen.
If you want to select multiple files and folders at once, tap and hold the first file, and then select the other files you want to restore by tapping them. A blue checkmark will appear to the left of selected files.
Next, tap the Restore icon located in the top-right corner of the screen.
Your files and folders will be restored.
Restore a Deleted File From Your PC’s Recycle Bin
If you deleted a file or folder from OneDrive, and it was synced to your computer, then you can also restore that file or folder from the Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (Mac). Note that this won’t work if you deleted an online-only file in OneDrive.

First, open the Recycle Bin or Trash on your computer. Once there, locate the file or folder you want to restore and then right-click it. Or, if you want to restore all of the files and folders, press Ctrl+A (Windows) or Command+A (Mac), and then right-click any file or folder. Next, click “Restore” from the context menu that appears.
The selected file or folder will then be restored.
Restore Your OneDrive Account to a Previous Version (Microsoft 365 Only)
If you’re a Microsoft 365 subscriber, then there’s an additional recovery option available to you—a full OneDrive recovery. Not only is this good for recovering deleted files, but you can also take advantage of this if one of your files becomes corrupt or if you get infected with malware.
To restore your OneDrive account to a previous version, log in to your OneDrive account and then click the “Gear” icon in the top-right corner of the window.
The Settings menu will appear. Click “Options” under the OneDrive Settings group.
On the next screen, you’ll see a new list of options in the left-hand pane. Here, click the “Restore Your OneDrive” option near the bottom of the list.
You’ll now need to verify your identity, so go ahead and click the blue “Verify Your Identity” button.
A one-time seven-digit code will be sent to your email address. Enter the code into the text box and then click the blue “Verify” button.
Once verified, you’ll be at the “Restore Your OneDrive” screen. Click the box under “Select a Date,” and then choose the time you’d like to restore your OneDrive to from the drop-down menu. You can choose between yesterday, one week ago, three weeks ago, or set a custom date and time.
Once you’ve selected a date, click “Restore.”
You’ll now need to confirm you want to restore your OneDrive to the selected date and then, once again, click that blue “Restore” button.
The restoration process will then begin. Before long, all of your files and folder will be restored to the selected date and time.
There are many ways to back up your files and folders—from cloud providers to external hard drives to another computer. Keeping your files and folders backed up to multiple locations is the best way to protect your data.
